ALEX BROWN - ARTISTS STATEMENT
I have had a fascination with light and colour since my degree in fine art painting at Camberwell School of Art in London in 1984, and on through my career as a professional artist.
It’s not light in the dramatic sense of Dark and Light as in Rembrandt’s work, but more how light makes colours. Artists that have influenced me are Turner, Monet and Van Gogh, as well as the work of scientists such as Goethe and Steiner.
“Colours which are shadows are a result of light itself” Goethe.
I like most of all to see how different light conditions throughout the day change the colours that we see. Big Skies over the landscape, different weather conditions, how light changes from the hills and mountains over the
I have realised that everything including all objects and conditions on earth act as a kind of prism, in that when light from the sun hits an object it splits up into all the wonderful colours that we see. It is this approach that informs all my work.
My approach and colour theory is called the Journey of Light. If you would like to know more about my theory please visit the section on this website called Alex Brown's colour theory.
